Chapter 24

“Christ, it’s been a long day.” Trout rubbed a hand over his face. He glanced at his watch, “And it isn’t even seven o’clock yet.”

“There isn’t much more we can do here and we’re both tired. I vote we call it a day.” Lauren was shuffling papers, separating them according to their content. “Hang on, I’ll get a box.” She disappeared in the direction of the utility room and returned carrying a long, low cardboard box with colourful artwork that proclaimed it once held lemons from Assam. She layered the papers across the box in such a way that they could be identified at a glance. Trout folded their evidence board and placed it on top.

“I’ll take them,” he said. “I need to figure how best to keep them safe and I have no intention of inviting any more trouble than necessary to your door.”

“Thanks. I’ll give a quick look in the attic when you’re gone and we’ll be ready to resume tomorrow. What’s on the agenda?”

“We’ll review the To Do list in the morning and decide where to go from there.” He looked at it ruefully. “We didn’t get that much on it in the end. I’ll talk to Mac at some stage tonight or in the morning, see what I can find out. He’ll run the car numbers if I ask him but I’ll probably leave it. I don’t want to bring too much attention to what we’re doing.” He noticed Lauren frown. “Mac’s as straight as a die, except maybe if Cork were playing in an all-Ireland final.”

Lauren laughed. “Well, if that’s his only weak spot I’ll accept him as a worthy participant in our cause.”

She walked Trout to his car.

“Would you like to come for breakfast?”

“Yes, I’d love to.”

“Half eight be too early?”

“Nope, perfect. See you then.”
